Music, Mindset & Overcoming Doubt – My Interview with PUSO 82.3 FM
A Conversation About Music, Creativity, and Reinvention
Every song has a story. Every artist has a journey. And sometimes, that journey takes unexpected turns.
I recently sat down with PROMOGOD for an interview on PUSO FM 82.3 to talk about my path from drummer to singer-songwriter, how music has been a tool for self-discovery, and the lessons I’ve learned about doubt, creativity, and persistence along the way.
In this interview, we discuss:
How I reinvented myself as a songwriter at age 50
My book Doubt Riding Shotgun and how it connects to my music
Why I believe anyone can write a song
The ups and downs of being an independent artist
The healing power of music and storytelling

From Drummer to Songwriter: The Unexpected Journey
I started as a drummer. That was my identity for decades—playing in bands, recording, and touring. But something shifted in my 50s. I picked up the piano again, started singing, and suddenly, songs just started pouring out of me.
For years, I thought songwriting was for people who were "touched by fire"—those mystical, tortured artists who had something special. But I realized that was just another form of self-doubt. The truth? If you have something to say, you can write a song. And you should.
On Self-Doubt and the Creative Process
A big part of my journey—both as an artist and as an executive coach—has been learning how to navigate self-doubt.
In my book, Doubt Riding Shotgun, I explore how doubt can either stop us in our tracks or become something we learn to work with. I’ve seen this in coaching executives, in my own creative process, and in so many conversations with fellow musicians.
"Doubt is always there, but it doesn’t have to drive the car. It can ride shotgun, but I’m the one making the decisions."
Songwriting, for me, has become a way to work through doubt—to take something internal and make it real. And the more I do it, the more I realize that self-doubt never fully goes away. You just get better at not letting it stop you.
Featured Songs: "Ticket to Ride" & "Angry Eyes"

During the interview, we also talked about two songs that are deeply personal to me:
🎵 "Ticket to Ride"
A song about love, pride, and missed opportunities. It explores the tension between opening up and holding back—something so many of us wrestle with.
🎵 "Angry Eyes"
This song came out of a tough moment with my son. I wrote it as a way to transmute frustration into something meaningful, and it’s since become one of my most well-received songs.
Listen to both songs in the interview above, or find them on your favorite streaming platform.
Lessons from the Journey (So Far)
Reinvention is always possible. Whether you’re 25 or 50, it’s never too late to start something new.
Self-doubt is part of the process. You don’t have to eliminate it—you just have to keep going anyway.
Music is a tool for healing. Whether you’re writing, playing, or just listening, music has a way of shifting something inside us.
I hope this interview resonates with you. If you’ve ever wanted to write a song, start a creative project, or push through self-doubt, know that you’re not alone—and that your voice matters.
