Self-Doubt is Trying to Protect Us
The way Doubt sees it, the less you risk, the less pain, heartache, embarrassment, and discomfort you experience. Why else would Doubt encourage us to procrastinate on whatever we deem important? It may sound like a giant leap of faith, but why else would Doubt exist? Like any survivor, Doubt is trying to protect you by whatever tactic seems most likely to change your course of action. Sometimes it’s about ensuring you do your best, while on other days, it's about tempting you to give up, procrastinate, and take less risk.
If you feel frustrated trying to figure out Doubt’s “good” intentions, that’s okay. Your relationship with Doubt is an evolving and complex one. But since Doubt is riding shotgun, you may as well strike up a conversation with this uninvited hitchhiker and see what makes him or her tick.
Imagine you are going on a road trip with a friend and spending your windshield time getting to know them. It’s just you, the open road, miles of wheat fields, and a chance to learn more about your elusive passenger.
The Uninvited Hitchhiker
Road trips tend to be a heck of a lot more fun and relaxing with a friend. You can take turns driving, double-checking the GPS, choosing the music, and cueing up junk food pit stops.
However, our newly named Doubt passenger isn’t quite so helpful. If he’s a worrywart like my guy, he’s the antithesis of fun, and his shotgun split-personality opinions were never invited! While you may have encouraged him at times, you did not intentionally invite him for the ride. Instead, you are stuck with your Doubt passenger. He remembers your past missteps and tries to steer you clear of your future transgressions for all he is worth!
Doubt is Protecting Us
Doubt is trying to protect us. It's as if Doubt sees the rumble strips on the freeway and is warning us to stay in our lane.
