About the Book

Doubt often adds his or her own flavor of color commentary!

I wrote Doubt Riding Shotgun in order to help others work more harmoniously with their negative passenger. Writing this book also helped me move past my own self-doubt that I’d write a book, become a songwriter, and many other self-imposed limits.

The idea is that Doubt never goes away entirely, and that's okay.

What’s important is how we come to know and work with our unique Doubt passenger so that we can trust our intuition, go beyond fear, and create the life we want.

My mission in writing this book is that Doubt can be heard, but doesn't get to have the final say.

Other Types of Self-Doubt: Imposter Syndrome, Perfectionism, and More

This book is meant to help anyone struggling with debilitating self-doubt in its many forms.

  • Self-doubt

  • Imposter syndrome

  • Perfectionism

  • Overwhelm

  • Not good enough

Doubt Riding Shotgun Reviews

★★★★★

“Dave expresses the notion that your doubt can be very similar to close family members or friends in your life in that you could choose to listen to and reason with their opinions or sometimes choose to politely disagree with them and agree to disagree. Learning to hear your doubt, but not always choose to listen to it is a very powerful paradigm shift when navigating some of your own fears. Doubt Riding Shotgun has been very helpful in helping me reframe and reconsider how to navigate my own self-doubt.” Stanton Moore, GRAMMY award-winning musician, author, teacher and performer.

“The overly creative mind has a particularly nasty habit of subconscious self-sabotage. Doubt Riding Shotgun helps untether the helpful from the detrimental, and the useful from the frivolous. Dave's writing style helps guide the reader to find their own supportive voice.” Greg Hoy Songwriter, Musician, and Co-Founder of the The Hiring Guild

“This book was a real breath of fresh air for me. Positioning doubt in this simple and conversational way, and providing so many ways to exercise muscles around the conversation we have with doubt. I have a habit of dog-earing the bottom of pages that I want to come back to, and I feel like I marked every page in this book.” Bradford Swanson, Music Technology Executive

Goodbye, Doubt! Great book! Dave dives deep into the metaphor of Doubt as a passenger in your car. He touches on world-class doubters like legendary music producer Daniel Lanois and gets creative with ways to name and disable your doubt. If you ever doubted yourself, your skills, capabilities or anything else, this fantastic book will help you move forward with clarity and confidence. Very highly recommended. ★★★★★ 5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect combination of the philosphical and pragmatic.

In my 53 years of life, only two other books have led to an inflection point in the way I live my life. The first was Jon Kabat-Zinn's Full Catastrophe Living and the second was David Burn's famous work, Feeling Good. Well, I have now added a third book to this top shelf - Doubt Riding Shotgun.

As someone who has been trying to finish a career change for five years and an 'aspiring' musician with 17 songs I can't finish, I felt stuck. If I received a favorable view during a work annual review, I felt that I was in the wrong meeting or I have pulled off a great scam on my employer for them to think I was doing good work. I never considered that self-doubt was the culprit.

This book made me realize that I have a highly intrusive 'doubt passenger'. Until I finished the book, I never thought that this self-doubt was something that can be overcome. I always thought it was just a truth and I had to deal with in a brute-force manner. Sometimes that worked, most of the time it did not. The author gives a perfect combination of high-level thoughtfulness, pragmatic advice, and personal anecdotes to help us understand why we suffer from self-doubt and how to overcome and rise above it, while also appreciating its beneficial side (i.e. keeping us out of trouble) Lastly, Dave keeps the reading entertaining and interesting by sharing his own experiences with self-doubt. This will be a book I re-read every year and share with friends - no doubt about that.
